My First Snow

It was like any other morning in Sheffield, and as usual I was busy with my daily routine. Breakfast was ready to be served.

As usual, I peeped from the window to check the weather outside. This morning was a little different from any other morning. At first I thought there were cotton flowers flowing across due to high winds outside, but suddenly I realized that it wasn't cotton but snow. It was the first time in my life I had seen snow. I had always fantasized about it and comics like Archie had fuelled my imagination all through my childhood. I yearned to see the snow and roll around it its magnificence. Snow excited me so much that I decided to give my breakfast a miss. I ran out of my house and breathed in nature's beauty.

It was very cold, but it was beautiful, picturesque nature at its best. Due to strong wind the snow was literally flying horizontally hitting me on my face, but that gave me more energy than my apprehensions of rough weather. The city was en wrapped in white. The road, the roofs of houses, the trees and the cars were all covered with lovely white snow. It was snow all over. Pretty snow, clean snow, fun snow, wondrous snow. I was so excited to share this experience with my near and dear ones, I called up my wife in India, and my colleagues in the city to let them know it was snowing outside.

It snowed heavily that day. There was no distinction between roads and footpaths. There were no cars on the roads, no noise.

We - my colleagues and myself - walked to the office through roads filled with snow. The snow was about a foot deep, so it took longer to reach the office as it took more effort to walk than usual.

We were so excited, that we started playing with snow, kicking it as if it was a football. On the other side of the road I saw some young kids making snow balls, so taking a cue from them we decided to make some ourselves and then started our first snowball fight. Oblivious of our age and time, we were playing like kids. A few of us took photographs with cell phones to capture this beauty.

When we reached our work floor, we found that most of our colleagues were working from home. We worked that day, but all the time we yearned to be outside, to experience more of the snow. At lunchtime we all went outside the office to resume our snow ball fight.

In the evening our families gathered, and we made our first snow man. It wasn't easy at first but then we got the trick. We rolled the snow over to make big balls out of it, and after shaping them our snow man was ready. We clicked a few snaps with the snow man, to show to friends back home in India.

At the end of day, it turned out to be a special day for me. Thanks Sheffield for giving me the first snow of life...
